The civil rights movement is very vociferous in defending the rights of terrorists, illegal immigrants and prisoners but will do nothing about fixed penalty notices which cannot be appealed against and, if not paid, can escalate astronomically all without any recourse to impartial adjudication.
I am a 75-year-old severely ill OAP and I got a fine for entering a bus lane. I did this as I needed an urgent prescription from my GP. I had to get to my chemist before it closed.
The traffic at the Leesons Hill junction with Sevenoaks Way was jammed solid due to traffic lights and roadworks, so I entered the bus lane by the railway bridge to turn left into Station Approach.
Several days later I was admitted to Queen Mary's Hospital where I was an inpatient for two weeks and, as I live alone, was unable to pay the £50 fine within the 14-day period.
I am now faced with a £100 fine which as an OAP whose only income is the state pension I will find difficult to pay.
I have not even got the option of prison, just an escalating fine.
