It has come to our notice that applications for listed building consent and planning permission have been submitted to Lewisham planning department for proposals to alter Manor House Library at Lee.

This is in spite of no full public consultation, only "information" in the council's own words. This is in spite of promising on June 9 to give local people information on the costs involved, but nothing has been forthcoming.

Very few of you will be informed of the details, but you will all be asked to pay for it via your council tax. Facts you may remember when the next rises come through.

It is shameful that we live in a borough that is changing so fast as to become unrecognisable with no public accountability and no regard for costs.

All those who love and cherish heritage and like to be familiar with what we have in the place we call home must unite and send objections in writing to Planning Service, Laurence House, 1 Catford Road, London SE6 4SW or by email to planning@lewisham.gov.uk.

Once it's gone, it's gone for all of us, including future generations. This is of importance to all Lewisham's residents, not just those in the locality concerned.

Plans may be viewed at Lewisham Central Library and at the planning department in Laurence House, Catford.
