FOLLOWING the letter Councillors Cannot Fool Every Resident (News Shopper, May 11), I think it may be helpful to clarify the council's position on some of the issues raised.

I cannot agree the council treats the borough as a one-town borough with a focus on Woolwich.

The author is from Eltham, where work is under way on the new Eltham Leisure Centre.

It will offer a wide range of public services under one roof, including three new swimming pools, a healthy living and fitness centre and a state-of-the-art library, as well as access to key council services.

Eltham Hill and Crown Woods schools will be among the first to benefit from the multi-million pound Building Schools for the Future programme. Both will be completely rebuilt.

Residents on many estates, including Horn Park, Pippenhall and Strongbow Crescent, are benefiting from the council's £200m Decent Homes investment to give homes modern kitchens, new windows and improved insulation.

We are delighted there will be a Crossrail station at Abbey Wood.

Our call for a Crossrail station at Woolwich has always been in addition to and not instead of Abbey Wood.

It was also incorrect to say the council said no to a pedestrian crossing on Well Hall Road. The truth is as a designated red route, the road is managed by Transport for London and not Greenwich Council.

People recognise the benefits of the regeneration of Greenwich. It is as much an investment in the lives of people in the area as it is in bricks and mortar or buses and trains.

I also believe it is an investment in which we can be rightly proud.
