I WOULD appeal to residents of Lewisham to give as generously as they can to the Poppy Appeal again this year.
As readers will be aware, the situation around the world at the moment continues to be of concern and British forces and civilians are once again at the forefront, assisting people in other countries.
The Royal British Legion gives ongoing support to families who have suffered a bereavement or injury from all the conflicts from the last century as well as these most recent ones.
This year marks the 90th anniversary of the end of the Great War, the so-called war to end all wars.
Battalions formed in Lewisham were among those from across the UK which suffered an enormous loss of life.
We should never forget their sacrifice.
Today, for many service people who have been recently wounded in current conflicts and still suffer the effects of war, the demands they place on the Legion continue to grow.
This year more than ever, funds are required to support these veterans and their families.
So when contributing this year, please remember them, and wear your poppy with pride.
SIR STEVE BULLOCK, Mayor of Lewisham
