I WAS one of more than 100 people who went to the last meeting of Gravesham Council to support our petition against the tower.

I was saddened to see some shopkeepers and their staff have been frightened into thinking that if we reject the tower it will be the death of our town. This is just not true.

However, now it seems public opposition to the tower has been so great Councillor Mike Snelling has called a temporary halt to their plans.

The people of Gravesend deserve an honest explanation of what is going on.

Is the council prepared to act according to the wishes of the majority of us and scrap the tower?

Or has it been daft enough to get itself into a position where it is saying to us either you have the tower or you have an equally hideous 12-storey warren of flats along the riverside? Most of us do not want either of these.

The council should go back to the drawing board.
