CAN YOU HELP?: I have been in correspondence with a gentleman who spent some time in The Hollies during the war before being finally rehoused in the Jewish Orphanage at West Norwood. During his time in Sidcup he was befriended by a Mrs Roadnight who often took him to her home in Manor Way and who he believes attended a small church there. Obviously Mrs Roadnight, who eventually moved to Folkestone, has died but is there anyone in the area who remembers her and her kindness to Michael Schneiderman, that very lonely young orphan? He was also cared for by nurses Snelgrove and Parkes. Does anyone remember them? Or are you related to them? Any help would be much appreciated.

WORD FOR WORD: In regard to Beryl Martin’s letter about the Townley Road toilets (Spend A Penny Improving Toilets, News Shopper, September 17), this could have been my letter word for word. I wrote to the council around two years ago. More recently when two women councillors plus David Evenett MP and Mr Walters came round canvassing for mayoral votes, I spoke to them about it. One councillor took notes, while the other said there are much better toilets in the precinct, but this is not the point. I might add toilets in Welling leave a lot to be desired.

HEAVY WORKLOAD: In regard to the fortnightly green bin collections, it is a disgrace binmen have been reduced from four men to only two, emptying the bins which now contain a double load. They now have to work much longer hours daily too. Recently on our green bin collection day they were unable to come, having already worked until evening. Luckily they came the following morning, when I spoke to one of them.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?: The proposed plan, I think, is for planned surgery to be transferred from Orpington to Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup, despite the many objections to this. But I understand there is a possibility in the future Queen Mary’s could be closed. What will happen to our planned surgery then? Especially if the Orpington unit might by then be utilised by others, or even rented out privately.
