I AM writing a book called The 1950s Home, to be published next year, and am looking for photographs and stories about homes in the 1950s.
If anyone has any photographs of their homes in the 1950s showing interiors of any rooms or gardens, and the exterior of their houses, I would be extremely grateful if they could send them to me.
I am looking for images to use with readers’ permission to illustrate my book.
I cannot pay in return, but will of course credit any pictures or text used.
I can find images of advertised or ideal homes but I would love to know about real homes, and to illustrate the styles and feel of different homes, and what it was like to live in the 1950s.
I would also be interested in readers’ memories of living in houses and flats in the 1950s — how older houses were modernised in this decade, what people thought about newly-built accommodation, about high rise or prefab homes, how they used their homes, the decor, architectural styles, whether it was easy to pay for home improvements, what they hankered after, what they loved and hated about their homes and so on.
Anyone who would like to contribute photographs or memories to this project can send them to me at the following address.
