I am writing in response to Ian Ross’s letter Pay Tribute to Area’s Greats (News Shopper, September 3) regarding the likes of Darwin, HG Wells and Enid Blyton.
I would like to point out Bromley Library has a very large collection of HG Wells books plus a bronze bust of the great man on a pedestal in the same area.
There is a blue plaque high on the right hand wall of the Primark store in the High Street stating HG Wells birthplace.
Also on a large wall in Market Square was once a painting of Wells with characters from his books.
When this became weather-beaten it was overprinted with Charles Darwin seated against a tree, but to the left is an oval showing HG Wells’s portrait.
In South Street there is another blue plaque stating Wells attended the infant school at this house.
There is also the HG Wells Centre at the right side of Masons Hill, behind Waitrose.
True, I haven’t seen anything to commemorate Enid Blyton but we do have a pub named the Richmal Crompton at Bromley South, opposite the station Like Ian Ross, I too would like to see a museum in Bromley, instead of our museum in Orpington, but I do not hold out much hope of this happening.
