IN THE letter Squirrel Problem (News Shopper, July 2), M Harries has the audacity to condemn squirrels for "damage to our precious woodland". Wake up and smell the coffee.
So much woodland has been chopped down to make way for concrete and vast areas of wildlife habitat have been destroyed - all by humans.
Why does M Harries not use harmless deterrents or repellents, instead of resorting to inflicting suffering on defenceless animals which are, after all, only trying to survive?
His actions are a disgrace.
The following extract is from Thames Valley Police Wildlife Crime Reduction site: "The implementation of the Wild Mammals (Protection) Act 1996 has made it easier for the police to act to protect wild animals in the countryside from cruelty than ever before.
"The Act gives officers more power to prosecute those causing unnecessary and unlawful suffering to wild animals such as hedgehogs, squirrels and foxes.
"Any member of the public who witnesses an act of unlawful cruelty against a wild animal should contact police immediately."
I strongly urge M Harries and others like him to contact Animal Aid, which gives advice and information on wildlife deterrents and repellents, on 01732 364546 or email info@animalaid.org.uk
