Letter to the editor: The major reasons we are in the state we are in over austerity cuts is because this government is not collecting all it could in revenue from those who are not paying their fair share of tax.

It talks about closing these tax ‘loopholes’ but, had it done so, there would be no need for further cuts in public spending.

The government would most probably have a surplus to spend on a house-building programme to sort out the housing crisis.

This would help get the unemployed back into full-time work and cut the welfare bill.

And rather than cut housing benefit, causing hardship to families with such things as a bedroom tax, the government should cap rents as this is the fairest way to stop the housing benefit bill from rising further.
