Letter to the editor: Greenwich Council is to be applauded for its commitment to preserve its conservation areas and live up to its name as a World Heritage Site.

It is a shame other groups with the same principles act in a contrary way.

I attended a planning committee meeting recently concerning a developer’s proposal to convert a single-house plot in a conservation area in two and install 10 bedrooms where there had been only three.

This was rightly challenged by the councillors present.

Imagine my surprise when the Blackheath Society spoke in support of the developer, in a breathtaking display of arrogance and hypocrisy, given its stated purpose is to preserve and enhance the area.

The public need to be alerted to its behaviour.
