TV star Maya Jama has opened up about how she was left ‘devastated’ after her teenage boyfriend was shot dead outside a Bristol pub.
Jama opened up about her past in discussion with SAS: Who Dares Wins star Jason ‘Foxy’ Fox as part of new Channel 4 show Foxy’s Fearless 48 hours.
The new show sees the former SAS soldier design a number of high-octane tasks to take celebrities out of their comfort zone.
Jama faces three challenges- including bungee jumping from a 75-metre-high transporter bridge.
Fox urged Jama to tap into her inner strength to get through the challenges ahead which led to a heartbreaking discussion.
Maya Jama opens up on ex-boyfriend’s death
When she was 16, Jama’s boyfriend at the time, 21-year-old Rico Gordon was killed outside a pub after getting caught up in the crossfire of rival gangs.
Two men were later found guilty of the shooting and given life sentences.
As part of the show, ‘Foxy’ asks what Jama has been through in life that has given her resilience to which she replies: “sadness”.
She said: "My dad was in and out of jail. At the time I genuinely didn't think it bothered me, I didn't think it was a problem. It was all I knew so that was normal.
"And then I got to 16, met a boy, was going to move to London. He was killed in the summer that I was supposed to move to London.
"I was devastated. I was so sad."
Fighting back tears, she adds: "I'm just, like, a mess, but I'd just rather not process loads of stuff and just keep going, rather than dwell on stuff that you can't change.
"I think when you don't have any other option, you just do. Do you know what I mean?"
Foxy replied: "No one is geared up to know what to do in any situation."
Jama added: "You don't know how strong you are until being strong is your only option, basically. You wouldn't know how you're going to handle something until you're in it."
Foxy's Fearless 48 Hours With Maya Jama aired on Sunday night at 9pm on Channel 4. It is available to stream on All4 after.
