BUNGLING transport officials caused chaos outside a Bexleyheath school by building a bus stop on top of a pedestrian crossing.

Parent Paula Dole, 43, says the stop at the junction of Watling Road and Pinnacle Hill "put children's lives at risk" as cars swerved parked buses just yards away from Gravel Hill Primary School's lollipop lady.

Mrs Dole, of Woolwich Road, Abbey Wood, told News Shopper: "It was comical but also a fatality waiting to happen.

"When commuters are late for work we would stand there for ages because they don’t take any notice whatsoever.

"That is why putting a bus stop there was so dangerous - drivers couldn't see round the bus when it stops."

A Bexley Council spokeswoman said: "We understand the temporary bus stop was misplaced by the TfL contractor.

"The misplaced bus stop is no longer in use and will be removed this week."

Gary Snewing, TfL’s Regional Infrastructure Manager for south London, admitted the error.

He said: “As a result of works on the Pinnacle Square project the bus stop on Watling Street was closed and a temporary stop was introduced.

"However it was placed in the wrong position by one of our contractors.

"The temporary stop was suspended and will be moved to a new position on Friday.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused to passengers.”
