A CHARITY football match was held in Eltham with a minute’s silence to honour cancer victims at the weekend.
Chairman of the Eltham Knights Football Club Kenny Wilkins created the annual cup match four years ago after a series of friends and family members suffered from the disease.
The 29-year-old laid down a Charlton Athletics Football Club t-shirt on the pitch in memory of a friend and fellow Charlton fan Carol Watson who died after battling leukaemia this year.
Around 60 supporters cheered on the close 90-minute match at Eltham Town Football Club’s grounds on Sunday.
The Eltham Knights won a narrow victory of 5-3 in penalties against the Charlton Casuals after the teams drew 3-3.
Mr Wilkins said: “It went really well.
“It was sad because Carol’s daughters and grandchildren came and gave a little speech thanking everyone for coming. It was quite a touching thing. Her mum loved penalties.
“My best mate died four years - I have not had a good time with cancer. I want to beat it and football inspires people.”
Mr Wilkins founded the John Bishop memorial trophy in memory of a nine-year-old who passed away from the disease. This year’s game raised more than £460 for Cancer Research.
