MEN are un-necessarily putting their health at risk by not visiting their GP more regularly, according to a doctor.

Common health problems among men include depression, stress, weight-related and sexual problems.

Heart disease is the biggest cause of premature death among men under 70 but the threat can be dramatically decreased through not smoking, a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Dr Howard Stoate, a GP based in Sidcup, said: "It’s a combination of macho attitudes towards health and the fact women spend a lot more time in the healthcare system throughout their lives both personally and then through their children.

"A lot of illnesses like bowel cancer can be nipped in the bud if they are caught early enough and part of that screening process is seeing your GP if you feel out of sorts.

"Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to your personal health."
