Eltham locals, including the Deputy Mayor of Royal Greenwich Angela Cornforth, gathered at Sainsbury’s Eltham to be photographed with a piece of great British History, the London 2012 Paralympic torch, when it came to visit the store on Philipot Path on Sunday, 19 August.

As the first ever Paralympic Games-only sponsor, Sainsbury’s took the opportunity to raise funds for their chosen charity, the Freddie Farmer Foundation, which is raising funds to set up a specialist physiotherapist centre in Royal Greenwich for children with cerebral palsy and serious mobility problems.

Cllr Cornforth said: “I talked to Freddie and he obviously knew all about the torch. I think it's a great idea to include the Freddie Farmer Foundation in this event because, as with the Olympics, it’s all about inspiring generations of young people.”

Locals paid £2 or donated more to have their photos taken with the torch and all the money raised went to the foundation.

Freddie’s mum, Deanne, said: “Freddie and his brother Olly have been really excited about today. We loved every minute of the Olympics, especially all the events in Greenwich, and we’ve got tickets for the cycling at Brands Hatch in the Paralympics.”

Wendy Howard, Sainsbury’s joint HR manager, said: “We invited Freddie in because the foundation is our chosen charity for the year and it fits in very well with the Paralympic Games. It’s lovely for the staff in Eltham to have the chance to take part.”
