GREENWICH’S kings and queens raced through the town in high heels and party gear for an annual drag race last weekend.

Clad in finery, sporting facial hair and at least a two-inch heel, around two dozen ran the course which started at gay pub The Prince of Greenwich in Royal Hill on Saturday [August 18].

Several hundred came out to support the runners as they wound through Hyde Vale, King George Street and Point Hill.

The event was run by charity Metro Centre and was hosted by renowned drag artist Dave Lynn and kicked off with a speech by Mayor of Greenwich Councillor David Grant.

Head of fundraising at Metro Centre Hugh Wright said: “It was a great success. We are thrilled.

“We had our Usain Bolts but there was one walker who glided around – a Marie Antoinette meets Miss Haversham.

“It was so good-natured. It was a fantastic community event with everyone pulling together.”

He went on to thank the residents, local authorities and businesses who lent their support to the evening.

Funds raised from the race – which will go to support Metro’s work promoting issues to do with sexuality, gender and identity within the community – are currently estimated at around £2,500.
