SMOKE billowed out of the windows of a home in St Paul’s Cray as it caught fire yesterday afternoon (August 18).

As these pictures show the blaze started in a bedroom on the top floor of the property in Whippendell Way.

It then spread so about half of the top floor was burning before firefighters from Sidcup, Eltham and Bromley managed to bring it under control.

They were called at about 5.20pm and were at the scene for about three hours.

At first it was thought someone was in the building when the fire started but after a search of the property the firefighters concluded the home was empty.

No-one was injured in the fire and crew manager Paul Prizeman, from Sidcup Fire Station, commended the residents for their help during the incident.

He said: “It was an extremely hot day and the neighbours were extremely good to us, supplying us with water to rehydrate ourselves.”

The cause of the fire is now under investigation.
