THE huge contribution of 70,000 volunteers made the Olympic Games possible, now they can finally relax.

Ka-Wai Ko, of Birchwood Road, Petts Wood, studies event management at Sheffield Hallam University and volunteered during the Games.

The 19-year-old was part of the events service team at the Aquatics Centre, which involved scanning tickets, guarding accreditation points and seating spectators.

Miss Ko said: “It was hard work but I’m getting withdrawal symptoms now, I wouldn’t mind carrying on, every minute was great.”

She added: “I have always admired the work sportsmen put themselves through.

“Being part of the Olympics and seeing the athletes practice and not always perform to their peak makes you understand that they are normal people doing what they love.

“The Olympics were an inspiration to the next generation.  Without volunteers the Olympics would have been very different.”
