MYSTERY surrounds the collapse of the Greenwich Peninsula Festival which was pledged £50k of council backing.

There were high hopes for the Dutch-roots festival of music, culture and international business located close to the O2.

But organisers pulled the plug on many of the events set for this week without explanation.

Their Facebook page reads: “We have had a great time at Eastern Electrics and were glad they were able to make such good use of the terrain. We thank their team for a fantastic day!

“Unfortunately for our other planned events, a number of circumstances have not allowed us to deliver the experience that we have promised to many.”

The massively scaled-back timetable now consists of weekend events with a “circus wonderland” on Saturday and an I Love Jamaica tribute on Sunday. The festival’s Big Screen has also moved to Well Hall Pleasaunce in Eltham.

Councillor Nigel Fletcher for Eltham North ward, who is Opposition Spokesman for Culture and Olympics, said: “The failure of the Peninsula Festival is a great shame.

"We raised serious questions earlier this year about the amount of public money the Council was putting into it, and there will be more questions to ask after the Games.

“The relocation of the Big Screen to Well Hall Pleasaunce in Eltham is a welcome move, and will give people here the chance to enjoy the great atmosphere we’ve seen at the Greenwich and Woolwich screens, though clearly it’s unfortunate there isn’t much time to tell people about it.”

Greenwich Council, which allocated funding for the festival, said all queries should be directed to the Peninsula Festival organisers who cancelled the events.

News Shopper has approached the festival bosses and is awaiting a response.
