You are never too old to win an Olympic medal – according to one sporty day care centre in Orpington.

Saxon Day Care Centre’s passionate pensioners took part in their very own Olympic Games over five days, finishing on August 3, to celebrate Team GB’s glittering success.

Rather than gold, silver and bronze medals, the spirited bunch won chocolate medals for coming top in the egg and spoon race, sack race, pyjama race and hoopla.

Dennis Moore, chairman of the centre’s management committee, said: “You have no idea how competitive elderly people can become when a medal is to be won.

“However, the most important thing is everybody enjoyed themselves.”

The gold chocolate medal for the hoopla event went to 99-year-old Doris, the oldest competitor.

The Saxon Day Care Centre is run by Age Concern Orpington.

Open from 10am to 3pm, Monday to Friday, it offers its client’s carers a chance to have some respite.
