CAMPAIGNERS fear new proposals to build apartments in Bromley town centre will turn it into another Croydon.
Developer Crest Nicholson on Wednesday, August 1 presents to the public revised plans for Ringers Road, where it has reduced the number of flats it originally planned from 160 to 148.
It was previously granted planning permission for the larger development in 2008, but this has since expired following a three year lapse.
Crest says it has now rethought its proposals in line with Bromley Council's own town centre vision, known as the area action plan.
But there are concerns the new buildings will spoil the town's character.
The chairman of the Bromley Civic Society and Friends of Bromley Town Parks, Tony Banfield, said: "We don't want tall buildings which will impact on the conservation area. We want to retain the character of the town centre.
"Retail is fine but a lot can be done within the existing framework, yet what we don't want is tower blocks everywhere.
"We want Bromley to be independent and to make the most of its individual character, and bring people in on that basis.
"We want any new development to fit in with that and not to turn the place into another Croydon."
Bromley Council leader Councillor Stephen Carr warned that Crest would need to ensure their proposals fitted in with the area action plan.
He said: "They now need to reflect upon this during their ongoing consultation with residents and stakeholders.
"I am sure that residents will wish to comment before any application is submitted so that they can genuinely shape any proposals that are put forward by Crest.
"Residents undoubtedly will demand a high quality scheme, which would be in keeping with a key town centre position, as will the council."
Debbie Aplin from Crest Nicholson said: "The Ringers Road site has the potential to kick-start regeneration within the wider town centre.
"Our new proposals are designed to work in tandem with the council’s adopted area action plan."
