A GRAVESEND community centre is celebrating after receiving £40,000 to improve its facilities.

Riverside Community Centre, in Dickens Road, spent the cash on brightening up the dark reception area, refurbishing three toilets, updating office space and repainting the former school hall to make it more inviting.

Energy efficiency has also been improved at the centre with the installation of movement sensors on lights and thermostats placed on radiators.

The money came from Biffa Award, a multi-million pound fund which helps to transform lives through awarding grants to community and environmental projects across the UK.

The centre's finance committee chair, Patricia Jefford, said: "The money from Biffa Award will enable us to help secure our centre’s future to be a venue of excellence, providing a quality and cost effective community hub for many years to come."
