RESIDENTS are resorting to wearing masks to escape the clouds of dust as 15-storey Alkham Tower in St Mary Cray is demolished.
The tower, which is over 40 years old, is now in the seventh week of the demolition process making way for new accommodation.
There was a demolition celebration Thursday but nearby residents have complained the dust is affecting them.
David Elliot, of Okemore Gardens, had a "funny turn" when he spent too long outside a few days ago and his wife thinks it might be due to the dust.
He has resorted to wearing a dust mask when he's outside.
Mr Elliot, 69, said: "I understand it's going to be messy but it's never-ending."
Keith Thrower, 74, said: "The dust has affected my throat, I can’t stay outside too long or I have to go inside and have a drink.
Affinity Sutton, the housing association responsible for the new flats, said all the correct procedures were used.
The Hill Partnership, which is responsible for the demolition, said it had only received one complaint so far.
A spokesman for the contractors said the dust compression system was only switched off during the photo call and that they introduced additional methods last week to make the demolition process even more efficient.
Concerned residents should call the resident liaison number on 0800 032 6760.
