Name: Ellen Gandy.
Age: 21.
Event: Swimming (100m & 200m butterfly) Location: The Aquatics Centre, Olympic Park Time: 100m butterfly – July 28 and July 29. 200m butterfly – July 31 and August 1.
Local link: Born and bred in Bromley, she moved to Melbourne at the age of 15 after her dad got a job there.
Career best: Breaking the European 200m butterfly record in 2009 at the British championships.
Career high: Silver in last year’s 200m butterfly at the world championships.
Sporting background: Ellen took up swimming competitively at the age of 11.
One year later she was all over advertising boards on display urging Londoners to back their city’s Olympics bid and now she is set to perform on the biggest stage of all in her home town.
Ellen has been based in Australia for the past six years but now she is back in London to try and claim gold.
She says: Not many athletes get the opportunity to compete at an Olympics at their peak — but how many get to do it at a home Games? It is an amazing opportunity.
We say: Ellen is ranked in the world top three for both of her events so is rightly considered a very strong contender for medal glory.
