Name: Gemma Gibbons.
Age: 25.
Event: Judo women’s U78kg.
Location: ExCel Arena.
Time: August 2.
Local link: Born in Charlton. Gemma began practicing judo with the Metro Judo Club in Blackheath and attended Westwood College (now Harris Academy, Falconwood).
Career best: Silver at the 2007 US Open championships.
Career high: Winning gold at the 2010 Orenburg European Cup in Russia.
Sporting background: Took up judo at the age of six at Blackheath’s Metro club, she enjoyed plenty of success in her teenage years both at home and abroad.
After dealing with the tragic loss of her mother when she was 17, Gemma went on to bag gold at the junior British Open and closed championships in 2005.
She says: I fought at the British Open and ended up winning that, which got me qualified.
If I fight the best fight I can, I could come away with a medal.
We say: Having missed out on qualification in the U70kg category, Gemma instead has had to settle for a place in the U78kg event after suffering a first round exit at the European championships in April.
Since moving up to U78kg she has won two medals, so her confidence of success at the Games might not be misplaced optimism.
