ENTERPRISING residents have cashed in on the Olympics and moved out of their homes to make way for Games officials.

More than 30 households in Deptford and New Cross packed up their belongings last weekend to stay with friends, family, and even in caravan parks - bagging up to 3k rent per week.

The guests will stay for up to two months -bringing a total £100,000 to the families involved - and include members of the Austrian Olympic management team, as well as on-call doctors.

Among the 100 visitors are staff whose 24-hour job is to keep the condom machine well-stocked for athletes in the Olympic Village.

The scheme is masterminded by estate agents Housemartins which hopes to give a boost to the area.

Director of Housemartins Ray Woolford said: "There was nothing going on in Lewisham and we thought it made sense to capitalise on the Olympics.

"Everyone is pushing Greenwich, but there’s no one pushing Deptford and it is a really good location.

"We think the council should have done more really.

"We went door to door in New Cross and Deptford and asked people who wanted to leave. We explained this was a good opportunity to move out, bringing £100,000 for local economy.

"Younger people moved in with mums and dads. I’m going on holiday. Some stay with friends.

"Some pensioners are doing it too - it’s more than their pension - it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity."

Gangland hotspots have even been snapped up with guests staying in Ludwick Mews - where there have been two unsolved murders since 2007.

Mr Woolford said: "It’s the gun capital of UK, yet people wanted to stay. We are trying to give the place an uplift and a positive spin."

ENTERPRISING RESIDENTS

Yolanda van den Steen, who lives off Grove Street in Deptford, has moved into a caravan for six weeks near Gatwick Airport.

The 46-year-old said: "We thought - why not!  We found this caravan dealer and bought it on the spot for about £2,125.

"Aeroplanes fly over every 60 seconds but you get used to it!

"Obviously the financial reward is always a bonus.

"It just seems a nice thing to do and doing our bit for the Olympics."

The fashion agent, who will get around £2,000 per week says she will use the cash to pay off the cost of the caravan plus a few debts.

Wayne Barron has just moved to Deptford and will be using the money to give his house a makeover and put in a new bathroom.

The 45-year-old said: "The house needed some things doing to it.

"There will be 10 people in the house so there will be wear and tear but the money I will get will pay for it.

"I think it is a good idea. I would have felt rather differently about it if the house was already mine.

"I just put a few things in cellar and locked it up.

"If it was full of things precious to me I would have felt more hesitant."

The teacher was going to stay with friends but has a cross-over with his previous flat and will stop there.

The Olympic guests moved into 33 houses in the area on July 16 and will leave on August 13.
