AN ABBEY Wood teenager is preparing to carry the Olympic torch through Barking and Dagenham on Sunday (July 22).
Joseph Kelly, of Glen View, was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2009 and is now in remission.
The 14-year-old, who attends Beths Grammar School, said: "I'm really excited and a bit nervous.
"I was just amazed to be picked to be honest.
"From what I've been through it's a big step up, I'm really proud."
Joseph was forced to stop his sporting activities to undergo radiotherapy but took up golf instead and now dreams of becoming a pro-golfer.
He says his twin sister, Rebecca, is amazed that he is carrying the torch and his school has been helping him prepare.
Joseph said: "I have been going on jogs in the evening with my friends and walking with my family.
"I have just been doing a bit extra than usual."
His mum Vida said: "I'm proud and excited for him. It's once in a lifetime.
"We have got family, friends and even school teachers who are going to be there to support him."
Joseph was nominated to carry the torch by charity Cherished Memories through Coca-Cola’s Future Flames campaign.
