FIREFIGHTERS will visit Gravesend Regatta to remind boat owners that fire safety is as important on a boat as in the home.
Crews from Thames side station will be at the regatta on Saturday (July 21) to talk about fire safety and the services they can provide to boat owners.
Watch manager Dave Mayhew said: “Boats are often in remote locations with difficult access. Fires spread quickly and could totally destroy your boat and everything on board.
“If you live on your boat it’s even more crucial that you take fire safety seriously. Don’t take risks with your life. Fit working smoke alarms and detectors they can help keep your crew safe and your boat afloat.
“If you’re drinking alcohol the risk of a fire rise increases. Alcohol can impair your judgement and co-ordination - drink sensibly and safely - don’t reduce your chances of survival.
“Think very seriously before jumping into one of Kent’s waterways no matter how warm the day is. Strong currents, unseen obstructions, even the water temperature can get the strongest of swimmers into difficulty.”
Boat owners will also get free advice packs and smoke alarms and people can visit the fire service’s community safety display between 10am and 5pm.

Kent Fire and Rescue’s boat safety advice:
- Make sure you have smoke alarms, carbon monoxide and gas detectors fitted.
- Have an escape plan
- Abandon ship and phone the fire service if a fire starts
- Always know your location
- Only carry spare fuel if necessary and keep it on deck in a self-draining locker. Never re-fuel near a naked flame or with engine running.
- Ensure gas appliances are properly fitted and cylinders stored securely and upright in a self-draining locker.
- Electrics should be professionally fitted and turned off as much as possible when you’re not on board.
- Never leave fires, heaters and cooking appliances unattended when lit.
- Keep flues clear and appliances well-secured to a fireproof bulkhead.
- Be insured.
