DARTFORD sprinter Adam Gemili has confirmed he will run for Team GB at London 2012.

The 18-year-old will also compete in the World Junior Championships, held in Barcelona two weeks before the Olympic Games.

Speaking to BBC Radio Kent this morning, he said: “I’ve got two weeks until the World Junior Competition and I’m going to get my head down and train hard for that.

“That was my aim for this year.”

The former Dartford Grammar School pupil went on to confirm he will turn his attention to the men’s 100m competition at the Olympics, after competing in Barcelona.

He said: “After that, it’s all focus on the Olympics, to get my head down and train hard for that.

“That is my plan for now, to get my body able to go to the Olympics and compete with the world’s top sprinters and not get beaten too badly.”

Adam took the athletics world by storm earlier this month when he ran the 100m in 10.08 seconds in Germany, well within the Olympic qualifying standard of 10.18 seconds.

He went on to compete for a place in Team GB at the Aviva 2012 Trials on Saturday (June 23), finishing second and securing his place in the competition.

Speaking on BBC Radio Kent about qualifying for Team GB, he said: “The night after I ran it, I didn’t get to sleep until 3am.

“I just couldn’t believe it. It was completely unexpected and a new feeling for me.

“I was just thinking I’ve qualified for the Olympic Games - people train their whole lives to do this.”

Adam only started full-time athletics training in January, having previously played football for Dagenham and Redbridge.
