As people respectfully stood in line for their opportunity to meet the Queen and her husband in Bromley yesterday, one lady may not have considered the reaction her choice of outfit would cause.
As he approached the attractive blonde, Prince Philip said: “I would get arrested if I unzipped that dress.”
And News Shopper reader Pam Shaw got in touch to tell us about her elderly mother’s brief exchange with the Duke of Edinburgh.
Having waited in the cold for some time Mrs Shaw’s mum, Barbara Dubery from Beckenham, was offered a foil blanket by a member of council staff.
As he passed by, Prince Philip spotted Mrs Dubery, who will be 90 on Saturday (May 19), and said: “Are they going to put you in the oven next?”
No offence was taken though as Mrs Shaw said the remark “made her day”.
Prince Philip’s gaffes
Some of the things the Duke of Edinburgh is reported to have said over the years that have hit the headlines.
To a driving instructor in Scotland: “How do you keep the natives off the booze long enough to get them through the test?”
To Elton John after hearing Elton had sold his Gold Aston Martin: “Oh, it’s you that owns that ghastly car – we often see it when driving to Windsor Castle.”
On the London Traffic Debate: “The problem with London is the tourists. They cause the congestion. If we could just stop tourism, we could stop the congestion.”
To the President of Nigeria, dressed in traditional robes: “You look like you’re ready for bed.”
To the matron of a hospital in the Caribbean: “You have mosquitoes. I have the Press.”
