HENNA painting and hair braiding were all part of an afternoon of fun to celebrate cultural diversity.

Fifty excited youngsters filled the hall at Welling School, Elsa Road, for the second annual Multi-Cultural Showcase as part the borough's Black History Month celebrations.

During the three-hour event the children, aged between four and nine, took part in breakdancing, art workshops, face painting and a fashion show.

Black History Month, which originally began in America in the 1920s under a different name but is held each October in the UK, aims to promote knowledge of black history and improve cultural awareness.

The Bexley African Caribbean Community Association (BACCA), Bexley Council for Racial Equality, the school and 16th-century listed building Hall Place all organised the Welling event.

BACCA co-ordinator Gina Williams said: "It was such a comfortable atmosphere and a real learning curve about different cultures.

"People were able to see they have more in common than they thought."
