A MOTHER who raised £250,000 for research into her son’s degenerative eye disorder has been selected to carry the Olympic torch.
Emma Salisbury of Yorkland Avenue, Welling will be one of just 8,000 people to carry the London 2012 Torch.
The 40-year-old, whose Torch Relay leg comes on July 20 through Gravesend, said: “I’m really excited, it’s a real achievement.”
Mrs Salisbury has been raising funds for national charity Fight for Sight since her 11-year-old son Tommy was diagnosed with choroideremia aged four.
Choroideremia is a rare inherited eye condition that causes a progressive loss of vision, and ultimately blindness, in men.
The world’s first clinical trial for a cure has been launched as a result of the money Mrs Salisbury has raised.
The mother-of-three added: “I’m hiring an open top bus on the day which will seat 88 people, so I’m inviting all my friends and family and people who have supported Tommy.”
