RESIDENTS braved the rain to soak up some of the borough's favourite poems.

As part of National Poetry Day, more than 60 residents gathered at One Bell Corner, Dartford, to listen to their favourite verses.

The national event has been going since 1994 and offers activities from live events to web-based activities for the young and old.

Dartford Council asked residents to send in their all-time favourite poems so it could display them in the town for the day.

Poetry enthusiasts submitted 20 entries last month and 10 were chosen for display on large coloured stands on October 5.

Residents stopped to listen to the poems being recited by three readers from the Dartford Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society.

A council spokesman said: "The afternoon was a great success and a really nice way for the people of Dartford to join in with a national event and find out about poetry."
