THE Attorney-General is to review the length of the sentences given to Stephen Lawrence’s murderers, after a request from a member of the public.
Gary Dobson, aged 36, and 35-year-old David were jailed for life at the Old Bailey yesterday for the racist murder of Mr Lawrence on Well Hall Road, Eltham in 1993.
Dobson, who is already serving a five-year sentence for drug-dealing, was sentenced to at least 15 years and two months. He was aged 17 when he attacked 18-year-old Mr Lawrence.
Norris, who was 16 at the time of the murder, was jailed for a minimum of 14 years and three months for the murder.
Sentencing the pair at the Old Bailey yesterday Judge Colman Treacy told the court that both men had to be sentenced by reference to their ages and maturity at the time.
He said: “It may be, therefore, that the resultant sentences are lower than some might expect, but the law as laid down by Parliament must be applied and I am constrained by it.”
The Attorney-General’s office confirmed that it had been asked to look into the sentencing under the unduly lenient sentence scheme.
