Spontaneous applause broke out before guest of honour Gary Lineker had even said a word at the speech day of Haberdasher's Aske's Knights Academy, Launcelot Road, Bromley.
The event saw 100 pupils receive prizes for excellence across the whole school.
Mr Lineker gave a stirring speech about the importance of hard-work, determination and discipline which he had worked on throughout his career.
Dr Elizabeth Sidwell, chief executive of the Academy said: "Mr Lineker inspired students by highlighting the importance of self-esteem and by encouraging them to believe in themselves."
Gary was very impressed to hear of the 200 per cent improvement in GCSE results this year - from 9 per cent of 5+ A* - C passes to 29 per cent.
The Acadamey was opened last year.
