A Kent-based developer has just become the UK's first carbon-neutral housebuilder.
For its work in sustainable construction, reducing the impact of climate and off-setting any unavoidable carbon emissions, Millwood Designer Homes was presented with the title by The CarbonNeutral Company.
To gain this status, Millwood carried out an extensive study into the carbon footprint from its business, including emissions from its headquarters and all business travel.
The study found Millwood's carbon emissions for the past year were around 251 tones - the same as the almost 200 return flights to Europe.
To combat this, as well as adopting construction techniques such as the use of timber frames, high density insulation, energy efficient heating and water systems, reducing energy consumption on the building site and advising new homeowners on how to run their property as efficiently as possible, it also donates to a carbon credits' scheme.
This allows companies to neutralise their damage by buying credit.
The money donated goes towards environmental schemes such as wind farming in New Zealand and sustainable forestry.
John Elliott, managing director for Millwood Designer Homes, said: "Much has been written about climate change and people may question how they can play their part.
"As a family-run business, I felt we should lead the way and be accountable for the carbon we produce by reducing our emissions to zero.
"I am delighted we have become the first housebuilding company to be designated as carbon neutral.
"Its about being aware of what we are putting into the atmosphere and doing something positive about it.
