OFFENDERS sentenced to community orders will now be working unpaid to improve the lives of residents.

Under a new scheme called Community Payback in London, staff from the probation service will supervise offenders as they tackle problems identified by residents.

The scheme was launched at Slade Green community centre in Bridge Road, Slade Green, which offenders are currently redecorating.

Other tasks will include removing or painting out graffiti, litter picking, pruning shrubs and trees and improving safety on public footpaths.

The tasks they undertake will be identified by residents through the police's safer neighbourhoods teams, in partnership with Bexley Council.

Borough commander Chief Superintendent Robin Merrett said: "We wish to emphasise the importance of being a responsible member of the community. They are also paying something back for the harm they have caused."
