With nearly 30 per cent of Britons said to be interested in buying property abroad, there could be more than 15,000 companies and individuals selling the potential home of their dreams somewhere in the sun - with few controls.
Pauline Gallagher, chief executive of The Federation of Overseas Property Developers, Agents and Consultants (FOPDAC) said: "With commissions anywhere between three and 20 per cent, compared to the average one to two per cent in the UK housing market, it is easy to see why businesses are looking to promote the overseas market."
The message is clear - buyers should conduct thorough checks before handing over any money.
FOPDAC advises using a recognised industry body to prevent buyers falling foul of disreputable local services.
It says using a member of a federation gives you a certain amount of protection.
