THE sister of a teenager who was attacked by a gang of thugs has spoken of her relief after he came out of a week-long coma.

Vickie Henderson says she was "over the moon" when her younger brother Daniel Allright regained consciousness at Lewisham Hospital.

The former Brent Knoll pupil suffered serious head injuries after he was assaulted by youths in Friendly Street Park, Deptford, on September 13.

The 16-year-old from Deptford was attacked with an advertising board, a stick and police say possibly a piece of rope or chain before the attackers stole his silver, black and yellow Carrera Fury 2003 bicycle.

Ms Henderson, 24, and Daniel's mother Geraldine feared the worst but on Wednesday morning they heard the good news Daniel had regained consciousness.

Ms Henderson said: "I was so relieved when he came round.

"We are over the moon.

"The nurse told us if they hadn't found him when they did he would have died."

Holding back the tears, she added: "It was amazing when Daniel gripped my five-year-old son's hand, who said I love you Uncle Daniel'.

"Daniel didn't deserve this. He is the nicest boy you could come across.

"He is not aggressive.

"I can't comprehend hitting someone so hard. I couldn't do to them what they have done to my brother."

Four male youths, two aged 14 and one aged 16, were arrested on September 21, in connection with the assault, all of which have been bailed to return to a south London police station.

Detective Sergeant Barry Kemp, who is heading the investigation, said: "This was a dreadful assault on a youngster that has left him critically ill.

"His mother tells us Daniel is a bright and well behaved boy, who had recently decorated his own bedroom.

"His family are devastated and we urgently need anyone with information on this attack to come forward."
