CCTV in Greenwich is set to be modernised and relocated in a £1.2m project, after fears the police station building where it is currently based will shut.
Under the scheme, around 550 cameras on housing estates and systems in the Woolwich and Greenwich foot tunnels will be integrated together.
It will see the council’s current control room will be moved from Woolwich police station in Market Street to council offices at Calderwood Street.
Along with antiquated facilities, part of the reason given by council officers for the move is an expectation that the Met will close the current building down in the next five years.
Initial interest in the project came from technology firms BT, Siemens and Fujitsu.
But after they pulled out, cabinet member for environment and community safety Councillor Maureen O’Mara has agreed the project should be undertaken by company Eurovia Contracting.
The project is due to take six months and the hope is everything will be operational by the time the Olympics rolls into town next summer.
Around £900,000 in funding has been secured so far, much of it from Section 106 funds.
