LONDON’S fire fighters had enough resources to cope with the recent riots, a report claims.
The London Fire Brigade said it dealt with a fire every five minutes on average during the peak of last month’s chaos.
Woolwich was one of the worst hit areas, the report says, were large blazes at the Great Harry pub, Wilkinson’s and it’s surrounding shops, along with the Blue Inc store in Powis Street.
While Wilkinson’s is up and running again, the other venues were completely gutted by fire.
The report also reveals that during the height of the disturbances, a large number of crews and engines were moved to Forest Hill so they could quickly be dispatched to trouble spots.
The Fire Brigade’s Union has claimed that resources were stretched “to breaking point”.
But chairman of the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority Brian Coleman said "During the civil disturbances, the London Fire Brigade faced its toughest ever test but showed itself to be more than up to the job.
“Over four nights in August, our firefighters tackled an astonishing number of fires despite facing physical and verbal attacks.”
