GCSE results come in for Lewisham pupils

16.34: IT has been another record year for GCSEs at Sydenham School Girls at the school in Dartmouth Road have once again helped it achieve its best GCSE exam results.

Many more students were given the top grades, with 34 per cent of the pupils being awarded three A or A* grades.

Seventy four per cent of its pupils secured five or more A* to C grades, which is above the national overall pass rate of 69.8 per cent.

And 64 per cent of the talented teenagers secured five A* to Cs including Maths and English.

Head teacher Barbara Williams was delighted with the youngsters’ achievements.

She said: "I could not be happier with these results. They are our best ever, and follow on from a fantastic set of A level results last week.

“The Year 11 girls worked really hard to achieve at this level, and I know the school will springboard to even greater success in the years to come.”

Amongst those who did particularly well were Gabriella Azanu and who managed to get an A or A* grade in every single exam.

Twins Malahat and Maryam Hassanzadeh were also praised for their achievements.

The comprehensive is one of the largest secondary schools in London, teaching over 1,300 girls.

15:24: BONUS Pastor's GCSE examination results have gone up again.

The Downham Catholic college says it has made outstanding progress this year with 66 per cent of Year 11 students attaining five A* to C grades including maths and English.

Overall, 78 per cent received five A* to C grades.

A and A* grades also increased with many students achieving the highest qualifications in their subjects.

Principal Ruth Holden praised the students, saying: “There are a number of students who gained up to 14 A and A* grades - this is exceptional and will no doubt be the beginning of a very successful academic pathway to University and beyond.

Ms Holden added: “We are extremely proud of the fact that our students, who are a comprehensive intake, leave Bonus Pastor Catholic College with well above average examination results and that for the last three years, all of our students have gone on to 6th Form Colleges.

“Success and achievement is a three way partnership - the school, the students and the parents.”

She went on: “Well done to everyone involved in these excellent GCSE examination results - teachers, staff, parents and Governors, but most of all to our lovely students who deserve all of the success that they have had.”

14.21: STAFF at Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham College say they are extremely pleased with this year's exams.

Eighty per cent of its pupils acheived five or more A* to C grades including English and maths.

Overall, 86 per cent of the college's students gained at least five A* to C grades.

College principal Declan Jones said: “Students and staff have worked exceptionally hard this year to achieve this excellent set of results. I am very proud that all our students with their Haberdashers’ passport of qualifications have been well prepared and are able to access post 16 education.”

He passed on his congratulations to all of his students who have done so well this year.

The college was particularly pleased with performances in core subjects like English, maths and languages - which includes French, German, Spanish Latin and Mandarin.

Some individual students also achieved some truly outstanding results.

Kate Graham-Shaw managed an incredible 10 A* grades and two As. Fellow pupil Isaac Lundie-Fallon also got 10 A* grades.

14.15: PUPILS at Conisborough College have celebrated achieving the school’s best ever GCSE results.

The first mixed year group to take the exams have achieved a 50 per cent past rate of five A* to C grades in English and Maths.

Meanwhile, 87 per cent of students at the school in Conisborough Crescent, Catford, achieved five A* to C grades.

Some of the school’s star pupils include Avision Ho who achieved 15 A* to C grades, Daniel Cosadinov who received 13 A* to C grades and Daniella Briscoe who achieved 10 A* to C grades.

All three of the 16 year olds have been given scholarships into Colfe's Sixth Form in Horn Park Lane, Lee Headteacher Robert Ellis said: “It is fantastic that the first mixed year group to go through Conisborough College has achieved the school's best ever results.

“The fact that over 85% of students achieved 5 A*-C Grades is testament to the determination of our students and the tireless support they received from their families and Conisborough College staff.

“We should all feel extremely proud of these outstanding results."

Around 900 boys and girls aged 11 to 16 attend the college which is joined in partnership with Colfe's School.

12.35: SMILES beamed across the faces of Blackheath High School girls as they collected their GCSE results this morning.

Ninety eight per cent of the students secured a pass rate at grade A* to C with 60 per cent at grade A* or A.

Buffy Eldridge-Thomas, gained 11 A* grades plus 2 A grades. Delighted with her achievement she said: “I am overjoyed and cannot put my feelings adequately into words.”

However, the 16-year-olds were not the only pupils at the school in Vanbrugh Park celebrating their results with girls as young as 12 achieving A*s or As.

Alyssa Rijnen, aged 12 attained an A grade in Spanish and Olga Trinder, also 12, received an A* in Russian.

Many Year 10 students who have been studying GCSE Science and Religious Studies modules, also celebrated their results, including Sally Lardner who gained 3 A*s and one A grade.

The school’s headteacher Lisa Laws said: “I am very proud of our students and their exceptional results.

“One third of our girls achieved at least 9 passes at A*/A grade which is excellent and a credit to their hard work and the outstanding teaching.”

10.38: There has already been good news for pupils at Sedgehill, which has marked a year of change with its best ever results.

Those achieving five A* to C grades including English and maths rocketed to 44 per cent, an eight per cent increase on last year.

The school, based in Sedgehill Road, Catford, went into a federation with Bromley’s Hayes School last year and head teacher Ken Mackenzie says this has made all the difference.

Mr Mackenzie, who became head in November after six years as deputy, said: “We’ve made our biggest ever increase and got our best ever set of results.

“We’re delighted for the students, though as a school we’re already looking at next year and how we can improve even further.

“We’re very happy to share the credit with Hayes and the new structure in place here.”

In maths, 57 per cent passed - a 15 per cent increase on last year - while 52 per cent passed English.

The numbers getting A* to C not including English and maths were 54 per cent.

Sedgehill is the largest school in the borough with around 300 pupils in each year group and a total of 1,600 students.

Mr Mackenzie: “Our precentages mean a lot in terms of Lewisham’s kids.”
