THE annual luncheon was held at Hadlow Manor Hotel, a very attractive venue.
Before lunch members visited Hadlow College garden centre for an interesting tour of the gardens and shop and coffee in the refectory.
After lunch the tour continued to Hadlow Castle which is really a folly in the form of a tower, added in 1812 to a very large 18th-century Gothic mansion.
There is also a courtyard and stables, all which remains of the original mansion which was largely demolished in 1951.
The remaining tower, courtyard and stable buildings were rescued by Bernard Hailstone, enabling them to be converted into two 20th-century dwellings.
After taking group photographs in the extensive grounds against the east side of the castle, members returned home after a most enjoyable day.
The next evening meeting will be held on October 12 with an illustrated talk on Emma Darwin and Others from Downe.
Meetings are held at The Baptist Church Hall, Station Road, Orpington, normally at 8pm.
Anyone interested in joining the Orpington Historical Society should call secretary Betty Dubery on 01689 831533.
