VOLUNTEERS on a clean-up mission have discovered Thamesmead's network of canals is choked with discarded plastic.
River charity Thames21 and its volunteers have been hard at work on one of the town's canals clearing litter and trying to discourage people from dumping their rubbish in the waterways.
The volunteers, led by Ashe Hurst, found the canal full of plastic supermarket carrier bags, bread bags and plastic bags containing dog mess.
Altogether they removed two vehicle-loads of rubbish, including scaffolding poles and supermarket trolleys as well as the mountain of plastic bags.
Thames21 has teamed up with Gallions Housing Association to encourage more people to get involved with cleaning up the town and its waterways.
Gallions is asking people to turn out on September 15 at St Paul's Church, Bentham Road, Thamesmead, from 9.30am to help clean another stretch of canal, help with the McDonald's litter patrol or join Gallions' own Fixit campaign.
People should wear old clothes. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
