HUNDREDS of bus drivers have been fined for making calls while on the move.
The 550 drivers from Greenwich and 750 from Lewisham were caught using hand-held mobile phones while transporting passengers between March last year and April this year.
The drivers were then issued with a fixed penalty notice and fined £30 under the Road Traffic Offenders' Act.
Figures detailing the fines were released after Mayor of London Ken Livingstone was questioned about them.
The act, which bans the use of all hand-held mobiles while driving, came into force in December 2003.
Fixed penalty fines could rise to £60 this autumn.
Green Party member of the London Assembly Jenny Jones said: "Stopping drivers who are using mobile phones sends out a clear message to the irresponsible minority they cannot expect to get away with putting people's lives at risk any longer."
