TEENAGERS are being encouraged to put themselves forward to take the coveted title of the borough's young mayor.
Youngsters aged between 14 and 17 have until September 20 to nominate themselves to become Lewisham Council's young mayor for 2006/07.
Applicants must live in the borough or attend a Lewisham school.
Candidates can be voted in by the borough's 16,000 11 to 18-year-olds on election day, which will be on October 11.
Last year 8,100 young people voted in the elections - a 48 per cent turnout - and 15-year-old Wilf Petherbridge took the title.
The young mayor, who is supported by a deputy and a team of 25 young advisers, is given a £25,000 budget to spend on community projects.
Over the next few weeks, members of the team will be paying visits to schools to encourage pupils to become candidates in the race to become the third young mayor.
