POLICE and residents are opposing an application for a restaurant bar to serve alcohol until 1am every day.

Arbria, in Leegate Shopping Centre, Lee Green, currently opens from 11am until 1am on Saturday and Sunday.

Licensing chiefs will decided on August 30 whether to allow applicant Faton Gashi, of Ennis Road, Plumstead, to open an extra five days a week.

The application has been opposed by eight residents and a petition containing 14 signatures has been sent to Lewisham Council.

The Met Police's licensing officers have objected to the plans on the grounds of preventing crime and disorder and public nuisance.

Lewisham police's Chief Inspector Wayne Nash said in a letter the Met would withdraw its objection if the premises was fitted with CCTV, provided security staff at events and stopped admissions at 11pm.

Chief Insp Nash also said a sound- limiting device should be installed to prevent residents being disturbed by loud music and the venue should join the Met's Pubwatch crime prevention scheme.

Most of the residents against the proposal live nearby in Leyland Road and say there have been ongoing problems with noise and disorder.

But Desmond Tyler, of Leybridge Court, Eltham Road, said: "I fully support Arbria's application.

"It will bring much-needed life into a dead, wasted area."

In the application Mr Gashi says staff would be fully trained.

He also promised to liaise with police on crime prevention.
