A new book tells of the memories and magic surrounding the North Downs. KERRY ANN EUSTICE talks to author and social historian Monty Parkin.

A historian and artist from Kemsing, Kent, has compiled a book about the North Downs based on the memories of one resident's family history.

Monty Parkin's book, On East Hill: Life on the North Downs, is based on the memories of Jack Hollands, and looks at his family's memories, including tales passed down by his great great grandfather, which Monty feels offer a peek into the past.

He said: "The family's memories and oral histories take you back to the turn of the century.

"Their stories give snippets into what life was like in the North Downs throughout the years.

Monty added: "It's an interesting place and I think people look at it as an area of mystery.

"It is separate up in the hills and it seems cut off and remote.

"The people who live there go there to be on the fringe and for years it has had its own private community.

"But that is changing now. As it is quite close to London it is becoming more suburbanised."

Monty is also an artist and intent on painting as much of the Kent countryside as he can before it changes and roads are built.

He sees himself as a social historian documenting the landscape for future generations.

He uses watercolours and ink to create his vivid prints, which capture the region's rural charm.

Some of his most popular works include Chelsfield Church, All Saints Church in Orpington, The Bridge at Eynsford and a number of the North Downs - depicted in every season and in the evening.

Forthcoming history talks which Monty is giving include;

September 13, Orpington Rotary Club - Pioneers of flight in west Kent.

September 19, Chelsfied Women's Institute - Village Remembered.

September 27, Petts Wood Methodist Wives' Club - Seal Charlton Murder 1908.
