THE exquisite artistry of the Orient, which became a European craze in the 18th-Century, is explored in a new exhibition at the Fan Museum. Through trade routes and colonisation, exotic eastern goods soon became popular with Europeans, and home-grown artists and craftsmen started producing their own versions of Chinese and Japanese decorations.
This western take on oriental designs became known as Chinoiserie.
The Fan Museum has combined items from its own collection with loans from other museums for this exhibition.
The museum provides a fitting backdrop for the display: The Grade II* listed building, built in 1721, has its own oriental garden.
Chinoiserie, Fan Museum, Crooms Hill, Greenwich, £4/£3 concs. For details, call 020 8305 1441 or visit fan-museum.org
